I can no longer send a text or email to myself

I updated my iphone 12 pro max to IOS 16.0 a couple of days ago. Today, I tried to send an imessage text to myself to transfer a list I had made in Notes to to my Macbook Pro running Monterey 12.5.1. It appears to send the message only as SMS and not iMessage so it never appears in iMessage on the Mac. So I tried to email it to myself. I copied and pasted the list from Notes into my Apple Mail app and tried to input my gmail account to send the list too. Even if I manually type the email address in, it will not let me send it. The vertical Send Arrow remains grayed out. I have checked my mail settings and I have rebooted my phone but to no avail. Is this a setting(s) or a bug or intended functionality?

Hey there lowellMBA,

While there may be several reasons for the issues regarding sending that note from your iPhone to your Mac, we'd like to set some expectations, along with explaining some methods that may prove easier.

  1. The first is the same method we use between our own iPhone and Mac called iCloud. Specifically, syncing iCloud Notes. Any new note created, any edits made, or any deleted notes reflect the same changes across all devices signed into the same Apple ID for iCloud Notes. This in turn saves storage space on your devices as the notes are stored within iCloud. If anything should ever occur with the hardware of either device, the notes all stay synced within iCloud Notes. This goes the same for any content you sync with iCloud between all of your devices. If you'd like to set up this option, here are more details: Set up iCloud for Notes on all your devices
  2. iCloud Messages can also be used to sync text messages between both devices, along with allowing your Mac to send/receive text messages once set up on both devices. This feature is called Text Message Forwarding, and if you're interested in this feature, this link has more details: How to forward SMS/MMS text messages from your iPhone to your iPad, iPod touch or Mac
  3. While you have iOS 16.0 installed on your iPhone, the latest version is iOS 16.0.2. Here's a link that'll show how to first back up, then Update your iPhone or iPad.
  4. We also recommend updating your Mac to macOS 12.6 as you're running an outdated version(macOS 12.5.1). This link will show how to first back up, then Update macOS on Mac.

Regardless of how you'd like to proceed, we do recommend at bare minimum to update both devices to the latest releases, then either test for the same issue sharing that note, or set up the two iCloud features we described. Please keep us posted on the results.

Cheers!

Thanks for the response. It makes my head spin sometimes how quickly updates are sometimes released. I wouldn't be surprised if one or both of those updates came out after I posted my question. As for iCloud. I'm one of those wary baby-boomers that don't trust putting my data in a cloud and won't until long (years) after I stop receiving corporate letters about my data being compromised because of hackers. Apple (and I love Apple products) telling me that my cloud data is secure is not good enough. Everyone thinks the data they manage is secure until it is hacked. The good news is, after downloading and installing the updates you mention on both my iphone and Mac, and after a second reboot of both devices, iMessage and emailing myself worked! Thanks!
