System Storage Taking Up Way Too Much Space

This question seems to need to be updated (since you can't reply to the same question posted a year back or even a few months back). Apple needs to address the issue adequately (detailed post on all of what's in System Data when looking at Storage, and let us know what can safely be deleted, OR better yet, improve optimization). I've read for full days over the past two years about this issue. Now that I have an M1, the problem impacts every update I make since I've owned the computer. What sense does it make to buy a brand new M1 and, within a couple of months, have to hunt down why System Storage takes up over HALF of my space? (Yes, I've signaled Apple, and they must know since this issue has existed since 2015-2016, according to the forums I've been in). They always want to blame it on some software when even without adding software, System Data still takes up large chunks of space.

With that said, has anyone created a LIST of where to look for files that can safely delete to clear up this problem?

I've read and done a few, such as:

  • Mail documents (subfolder under Mail folder that contains file attachments in your e-mails, make sure that you've saved those you want to keep before doing this, with the best habit being to save them when you read the mail and then deleting file attachments using the function in the Mail App [when it chooses to work])
  • Cache (subfolder in Library)
  • Cookies (via Preferences of Safari)
  • Locations where apps such as Adobe (I don't have) or others keep caches or hidden data
  • And there are other locations; check with Apple support.

I'd appreciate it (and I think the over 1900 people I saw that have had this issue over the past few years would probably appreciate it as well). This will be my second go around trying to clean up my M1 just to be able to update a 4 GB update so the Mac can communicate with my iPhone.

Thanks!

PS. I hope macOS Ventura will fix this (or have improved optimization) in October.

Rebuild the Spotlight index on your Mac

What is “Other” storage on a Mac, and how can I clean it out?

Free up storage space on your Mac

OmniDiskSweeper Safe to use

GrandPerspective

How to delete Time Machine snapshots on your Mac

See used and available storage space on your Mac

Locate backups of your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch

Notation - If the user is using a cloning software like Carbon Copy Cloner - suggest tweaking the Safety Net Feature in this software. It may be making addition Snap Shots that are not being Cloned to the Eternal Drive. If this should be the case, these Snap Shot could be using additional space on the drive

The final word from Apple on Managing the " Other/ System Data “ Category

Other / System Data: Contains files that don’t fall into the categories listed here. This category primarily includes files and data used by the system, such as log files, caches, VM files, and other runtime system resources. Also included are temporary files, fonts, app support files, and plug-ins. You can't manage the contents of this category. The contents are managed by macOS, and the category varies in size depending on the current state of your Mac.

To really see what is on the Computer now , both Hardware & Software, and to take a pro-active approach in preparations for macOS 13 Venture --- >>

Understand, we are all working Remotely from all around the world.

Therefore, we do not have the On-Hands experience the User ( you ) has with this computer.

The next best thing for us to having a semi - actual On-Hand experience  with this computer is to follow the steps below

Download the Application Etrecheck directly from the Developer.

The application is free or paid from added features.

It will take a Snap Shot -  both the hardware and software.

The Report will Not Reveal Any Personal Information.

Post back the Full Report - copy and paste - using the Additional Text Icon ( 3rd Icon to last )

We can have a look at the report for possible issues and may have possible suggestions to resolve the issues.

Yes, that finally was what I discussed with the Apple rep (level two tech) after he confirmed that my 73 G of System Data storage was not normal. I have to remove what Apple considers questionable apps (Malware Bytes, Daisy Disk - even though I've had some reps use them in the past) before macOS Ventura and see if this stops happening. And I'll also clean up all the files we discussed.

And thanks again, as I've used EtreCheck, which has shown me some of the issues. Who are "we"? I don't feel comfortable sharing it here, but here are the warning issues it showed:

  • Stuck iCloud with 96 files pending
  • Large system modifciations in the background (5 apps which I recognize and need, but I may see about tunring off teh Microsft Updaters (two of them OneDrive & Office)

I'm looking at the solutions they suggestion and will keep at the Log files more regularly. Thanks a lot!

Hello and thanks! I wouldn't have thought I'd need to do some of the things here I've done, and a few of them, like rebuilding the Spotlight index, I wouldn't have thought I'd need to do so soon, but I will try. Also, while cleaning up my files today to be prepared for various macOS and other updates (like the one for my iPhone that caused me to have to do all of this again), I found another culprit for large files. In addition to the Mail documents subfolder, the Mail> Logs subfolder (every time Mail connects to the servers) has many files. I have HUGE files there and found older posts in this forum that help explain how to clean that up).

Can I delete the HUGE Mail log file? 342 GB - Apple Community

mail logs filling up disk space: why? ok … - Apple Community

Much appreciate your list! I use Daisy Disk and Gemini II, but haven't seen Grand Perspective, so thanks!

Q - " PS. I hope macOS Ventura will fix this (or have improved optimization) in October. "

A - From my years of experience going back to OS X 10.4 Tiger ( Released April 29, 2005 ) and every single upGrade since then and even to Monterey macOS 12 --- > Pre-existing Unresolved Software Issues.

They should be resolved prior to upgrading - they may carryover to Ventura macOS 13 making the system unstable / unusable.

Am I to understand that this issue (which actually includes several issues), but let's call it the untransparent System Data issue, has existed since 2005?

And I don't quite understand what you mean by "They should be resolved prior to upgrading - they may carryover to Ventura macOS 13 making the system unstable / unusable." Is there something I need to do (other than try to clean up all these files in the locations I've mentioned [plus the locations mentioned in the various articles you shared])?
