Apple Watch Ultra wrist detection?

Does anyone know if wrist detection has finally been eliminated on the Ultra? I see apple ads with divers wearing their ultras on top of their wetsuits and also on top of their cold weather base layers and the display is on and functioning. With my series 7 as soon as my tattoos get under the sensor the screen locks and asks for a passcode. And the always on display feature doesn’t work either due to my tattoos. I’m not really wanting to upgrade to the ultra but if I can get full functionality from my watch I may go ahead and upgrade.

Hey, Basshammer. You’re correct, and that’s creates quite a conundrum.

The people in the video aren’t using their Apple Watch for anything other than diving: Measure underwater temperature, duration, and depth on Apple Watch Ultra - Apple Support

The Apple Watch Ultra works the same way any other Apple Watch does in all other respects. Wrist detection is still needed for the other Apple Watch features.

Feel free to get back to us with any questions or problems you may have.

All the best.

Hello Basshammer,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities!

If we understand your post correctly, you're having an issue with wrist detection and your tattoos. We're here to help!

Permanent or temporary changes to your skin, such as some tattoos, can impact the wrist detection. The ink, pattern and saturation of some tattoos can block light from the sensor.

One thing you can do, is in the Apple Watch App on our iPhone, go to the passcode setting.

From there, turn passcode on, but turn wrist detection off so that you won't constantly have the watch lock the screen with wrist detection.

Hope that helps.

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

Take care!
