SOS stuck after charging iPhone 14 Pro

Several times now after setting up my iPhone 14 Pro, specifically when charging overnight, my phone will seemingly lose cellular connection and be “stuck” in SOS mode. I have WiFi but cannot connect to the internet. Turning off and on cellular doesn’t work, but rebooting fixes.

I have cellular service, my account is in good standing, etc. and the restart of the device fixes.

I know I’m not doing anything to cause this as my phone works perfectly fine throughout the day and until bed, placed on charger, wake up and occasionally it won’t work and I have to reboot.

Seems like a bug with IOS 16 but then again I’m not finding anything online really about this issue. So, am I somehow doing something wrong? Also, why does internet not work when connected in SOS mode?

iPhone 14 Pro, iOS 16

While it isn’t normal on your phone, it doesn’t appear to be a problem with over 500 million other phones that have been updated, so it’s something that you need to troubleshoot, or contact Apple for help with troubleshooting your phone’s problem.

Instead of restarting your phone, just turn on Airplane mode for 15-30 seconds.

When the phone is charging, how strong is the cellular signal at the location of the charging? If it is very weak the phone can lose its network connection. After trying to reconnect for a while, it will stop to avoid wasting energy until you force it to re-scan.

This also happens to my iphone 14 pro. Phone works fine all day then after overnight charging no cellular or wifi internet until I reboot the phone.

Apple even sent me a replacement phone and it still does the same thing. And I also use express vpn. One of the techs at apple said it was express vpn that was causing it.

Going to uninstall the tonight and see if that works. I’ll report back.

I have made 2 changes that seemed to have solved the problem. I’m not sure that they are related, probably not but I am no longer having the issue.

1. Verizon did not set up my phone properly with the digital SIM card. This caused issues with mms texting. I could not text images to android users or simple text messages to groups that include android users (apparently group messages are sent via mms). Verizon reconfigured and it resolved the texting issue. I also did not have the SOS issue after this. Could be coincidence.

2. I the. Reached out to Express VPN and they had me change a setting. Settings>Network Protection> unselect the first option to block internet traffic.

Hope this helps.

Yes, this works, but as I said there appears to be some bug. Based on other searches now, seems to be confirmed I’m not the only one and it’s across multiple carriers so I’ll continue force restarting until Apple releases an IOS patch to resolve.

Thanks for providing feedback, especially with respect to Express VPN. The MMS problem is not related to the SOS. When you activate an iPhone 14 on Verizon their automated system does not set up MMS correctly. To fix it you need to call Verizon tech support (611 on your phone), tell the nice representative who answers that you need to speak to a senior tech to fix a problem with the provisioning of MMS on your account. This is a universal problem with the iPhone 14 provisioning by Verizon, so the tech should know how to fix it. And hopefully the 1st tier reps will eventually learn also.

I also have the same issue where i cannot send a text to an android user. Tried to text a bunch of android users on christmas day and didn't go through so i used signal instead.

I believe Lawrence is correct that it’s definitely the vpn. I just deleted express vpn and will see if fixes all of these issues.

The vpn made me feel anonymous but can I really trust them??
