how does apple care plus work?

my iphone 13 pro max is broken more like entire back is smashed/cracked dropped it on cement and it finally broke. Can i exchange it for a different color of the same phone and model or does it have to be the exact same color? idk how applecare plus works i've had the phone for basically over a year now or just under a year. Glad i found out i have applecare anyways because i never buy it and didn't know i had it because the phone was a graduation gift from my parents and i think they splurged on it. if i can't it's not the end of the world. i'll just exchange it like normal.
