My iphone and mac still "connect" to a wifi netowrk that no longer exists

Very bizarre issue here.

I had a problem with a router and AT&T sent me a new one. It's connected but not to the internet. There are more issues.

The old router, with an older ID and password is boxed up to be sent back to AT&T. The old network name still shows up and both my phone and computer claim to be connected to it.

You can remove the old network...

>System Preferences>Network>Advanced>WiFi use the +/- to delete

Change network settings on Mac - Apple Support

View and edit your Access Point Name (APN) on your iPhone ...

Where exactly does the old network show up?

If it appears under "Preferred Networks" on the Mac or under "My Networks" on the iPhone, that just means it remembers that network, not that it is connected to it. Only the one in blue on the Mac or the one directly under the wi-Fi switch on the iPhone are actually connected.

If it is actually connected to the specific network, then it means that network is still around. Either the new router has the same network name as the old one, or there is another wireless router around generating that network name.

Strangely enough, the AT&T tech had me do a hard reset on the new router. Now it's not showing the old network name, but the new one on the router's own label. Apparently when you plug in a new router, by default it uses the old network name and password.

Now I have reset all my devices to the new name and password and it works somewhat.

I still have a red "broadband" light which apparently means one of the "twisted pairs" is not working. The tech is coming this afternoon to fix it.

Thanks for the help.
