How do I stop hearing text chimes during phone calls? Is there a way to do it without physically flipping the silent switch?

It seems like you're wanting to turn off text chimes/notifications only when you are on a phone call, right?

Currently, you will need to manually put the phone in silent mode using the toggle on the side of your phone. Otherwise, you can selectively turn off the notifications in Settings > Notifications. Keep in mind, that you will need to turn them back on after each phone call.
