Yet another iTunes Not Recognizing iPhone 13 Pro

First off, running 10.13.6 w/iTunes 12.8.3.1 on 2010 Mini. No possibility of updating further. Have already looked at the following, which makes no difference:

If your computer doesn't recognize your iPhone, iPad, or iPod - Apple Support

(Have already done an SMC Reset, and tried virtually everything I can think of).

Now this is where it gets very interesting. I was able to get the iPhone recognized in iTunes (same version/same OS) on Mac (late 2009):

Steps involved - to the best of my recollection:

-Connected iPhone

-Opened iTunes->Preferences->Devices,

-Which Shows the latest iPad backup on 9/16/22. (Note, screenshot below is current from the current iTunes Mini. As you will see, the one at the Mac is now gone, history).

-Deleted that device backup - which obviously means losing all the backup data for the iPad.

-Connected iPhone. Network set to "iPhone USB"

-Trusted

-Then was prompted to allow a software update, which, as far as I can tell installed, among several other things, a brand new AppleMobileDevice.kext (I can post its related info.plist if needed).

-At this point, the iPhone was able to update through iTunes. Plus a backup of the iPhone was created.

-I can do all the same at the Mini, but as that would involve completely losing the current iPad backup there, not what I want to do.

So bottom line question: how to get the iPhone recognized in iTunes without deleting the current iPad backup in iTunes->Preferences->Devices?

Or what else to try that I haven't already tried?

Sort of, I was thinking use the iPad backup you don't want to lose, to first restore that to the iPad for safe keeping, do your stuff for the iPhone, then backup the iPad that has the older backup on it, then update the iPad.

I also wonder if you can trick it by either...

Backing up under a new user.

Or...

Renaming or moving the backup file?

You mean delete the current iPad backup to allow the iPhone in that Devices location - what I did at the iMac. Next, update/backup the iPhone (with that new kext download), then delete that backup and do a new iPad backup? Unless I misunderstand, either way I lose one of the backups, the iPad or the iPhone.

What I need is to find some way to add a second backup to that iTunes Devices location, while keeping either the iPad or iPhone backup.

Btw, just tried tt2's suggestion for someone perhaps in the same situation - didn't work:

Assuming a suitable version of iTunes is in place then in Finder use the menu item Go > Go to Folder..., copy the following text, paste it into the dialog box and press enter:

/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/MobileDevice.framework/Versions/Current/Resources

Unlock your device and connect it to USB. Double click on MobileDeviceUpdater in the folder that has opened. It should notify you of a software update. Install it and iTunes should hopefully recognize your device.

If these steps haven't worked you can also try reinstalling iTunes12.8.2.3.dmg (El Capitan/Sierra) or iTunes12.8.3.1 (High Sierra) while your device is connected and unlocked

No need to restore the iPad, it's already up to date. Just want to be able to save the backup in that iTunes location.

Actually what I'm thinking of trying next is to delete the iPad backup (have it copied in another location anyway), then create the iPhone backup there - assuming what worked on the iMac will work on the Mini. Then reinstall the iPad backup, and hope that it will save the iPad backup as a second device, along with the iPhone one.

Thanks tt2, tried everything you suggested, including re-installing iTunes 12.3.8.1 and re-doing the trust options on the iPhone (although I've never been asked to trust the Mini (10.13.6) with the iPhone connected). Supposing that what I was prompted to download at the iMac was this (from Macworld article) - tried the procedure described in first post above that brought this up on the iMac, but doesn't work at all on the Mini - update never offered. Only result was to completely lose the iPad backup:

Since I've played all the obvious cards, what I'm now wondering is if it would make any sense to bring over several items time stamped with newer dates at the iMac - perhaps the reason this worked successfully at the iMac, but not the Mini. First off, the AppleMobileDevice.kext (side by side comparison of version.plists iMac 7/19/22 /Mini 8/19/21) Looks like different versions (not sure why, since both are 10.13.6):

iMac

Mini

Next up: MobileDeviceUpdater at iMac (9/1/22) (from FindAnyFile)

Next up same from Mini 8/19/21:

Both iMac and Mini have the same High Sierra version - appears to be the latest: 17G14042.

I have the 10.3.6.02 Full Installer. Considering running it over the current HS. But thinking that this might be fruitless, not to mention, very time consuming.

If both HS versions, iMac/Mini, are the same, wondering what else might account for the differences in those files I'm seeing?

Won't go into all the gory details, but reinstalled 2X - hours and hours of wasted time. Both reinstalls brought me to v.17G66*, which wouldn't allow the 2020-006 Sec Update to install, in order to bring it up to 17G14042, the most current HS version. But was finally somehow able to install that 2020-006 update over the current startup disk. Yet neither the 17G66, nor the 17G1402 at the startup disk with the 2020-006 Sec Update reinstalled, made any difference for the iTunes backup.

Bottom line, I'm giving up on this project and will just backup the iPhone at the iMac, where it is working, instead of the Mini. The Mini, btw, has no problem backing up the iPad at iTunes.
