We used to be able to do everything the physical remote could do, including volume adjustment. After ios16 update we can no longer control the volume, it just adjusts local device volume instead of passing it through to the Apple Remote app.
Very annoying - no one asked us - what were they thinking?
Work around: install Volume Pro and add widget to lock screen
I have found restarting the Apple TV works but I need to do it every time. So annoying.
Because we’re just burnt out when every update Apple arbitrarily changes things. Anytime I’m watching something on my Apple TV now I can no longer control the volume on my phone it just adjusts the TV. Not to mention 16.0 until 16.1 volume control for the Apple TV on the iPhone was broken.
I’m surprised no one has responded to this. I have the issue too since iOS16 update. So frustrating.
