Hello jimmyjoefutonjockey,
If your Apple Watch is getting hot, then we'd recommend viewing the tips and steps listed here: Keep Apple Watch within acceptable operating temperatures - Apple Support. You can also find the steps below to resolve your temperature concern.
If your Apple Watch gets too hot
If your Apple Watch experiences above-normal temperatures, it displays only a red thermometer and the time. Here's what to do:
1. If you're wearing your device, remove it from your wrist. If your Apple Watch is in the process of charging, remove it from its charger. Your watch turns off a few seconds after displaying the thermometer. If you leave your watch on the charger, your watch won't turn off. If you try to turn your watch back on, the red thermometer will appear again.
2. Move your Apple Watch to a cooler place and let it cool down before putting it back on or continuing to charge it. When your watch cools down, it turns back on.
3. If you're making cellular calls on a cellular model of Apple Watch in an area with a weak cellular signal, move to a location with a stronger signal.
In reference to your charging concern, you came through from an article that provides excellent steps if your watch is not charging at all. If that is not the case and it is only having an issue with reaching 100% charge percentage, then we'd like for you to review the Optimized Battery Charging feature. More info on the feature can be found here: Apple Watch Battery and Performance - Apple Support.
In the article it states, "Optimized Battery Charging is designed to reduce the wear on your battery and improve its lifespan by reducing the time your Apple Watch spends fully charged.
When the feature is enabled, your watch will delay charging past 80% in certain situations. In these situations, the watch's battery level will remain between 75% and 80%. Your watch uses on-device machine learning to learn your daily charging routine so that Optimized Battery Charging activates only when your watch predicts it will be connected to a charger for an extended period of time." This could be causing the concern where your device is not reaching 100% charge percentage.
Cheers!
