Garage Band (and other apps) Input Monitoring in iOS 16 does NOT work.

Since updating to iOS 16 Garage Band (and Tonebridge, and Amplitude) no longer has the option to monitor input. I can no longer hear what I play in real time. I can still record input and tune a connected guitar, but the option to turn on monitoring is no longer available.

I'm using both an Apogee Jam (original) and a Jam 96k. Same issue on both. Firmware is up to date.

Is anyone able to activate Garage Band's Input Monitoring using iOS 16? If so, what guitar interface equipment are you using?

Eureka!

I just installed the iOS 16.1 update on my iPhone 12 Pro Max and the monitoring feature is back!

Hope it works for others.

Quick update...

After updating to iOS 16.1 the problem was resolved in GarageBand. ToneBridge was again able to detect a connected instrument but the audio was very crackly. Within a few hours there was an update for ToneBridge on the App Store which resolved the issue for me.

All-in-all kudos to both Apple and ToneBridge for addressing the issues fairly quickly. The support staff I spoke with at both companies were excellent.

I finally gave up and upgraded to an Apogee JAM+. Didn’t want to cuz 1) my JAM was still in fine shape and 2) JAM+ is $180! Apogee provided incredible support btw, even testing an iPad 9 with a JAM+ to make sure it works. They will sell you a refurb JAM+ (store demo, open box etc. ) for $159 and you can get a $25 trade in on the JAM legacy. I got a demo from local music store. Saved on shipping. Works great, altho there are some odd control “features” between the JAM+ and whatever app you are using.

Still, the whole thing sucks, thanks for nothing APPLE.

Hi Mgoetz33, I had to give in and splurge £100 on a secondhand Apogee Jam+ in the end. It solved the problem straightaway, but nevertheless a frustrating scenario. A warning, though: the input is way louder than my previous interface, so it’s difficult to get the levels to match on songs I was halfway through. I also have to readjust the levels on every take, as the Jam+ doesn’t seem to save them

Same here. Using iRig 1, lightning adapter. Amplitude works sometimes but Audio is all static and when playing Apple Music songs with trainer, sounds like its underwater and detuned. Tonebridge effects dont work at all, but can hear Preview Sound with no issue. The only thing that does work now is input on Garageband but always need to reselect Monitor input when switching Amps

Since updating to iOS 16.1 (now at iOS 16.2) both my Apogee Jam and Jam 96k have been working fine with both GarageBand and ToneBridge (I did have a small issue with ToneBridge on iOS 16.1.2 where the audio would only play from the phone speaker rather than the stereo speakers). Given my past experience with Apogee and the responsiveness of their support I'd feel confident in recommending them.

My iRig worked great until the iPhone lost its headphone jack so I have no recent experience with that product.

Years ago I have iPad 2 and iRig. I don’t remember clearly, but they works no problemo. Now I have iPad 2021 and recently find my iRig. If I connect headphones to iRig, iPad works how it should. If I play drums on GarageBand and headphones connected via iRig, iPad still works just fine.

Disaster (aka Apple quality) starts as soon as I switch to amp. Instead of read iRig guitar input it read…. iPad”s inbuilt microphone! More fun, instead of headphones (which are still connected via iRig) Garage Band output sound via iPad’s inbuilt speakers)). Also, only able to hear Guitar only than play recorded. No monitor option. And one more thing - than I remove iRig monitor option suddenly appears. But as I insert iRig into iPad monitor option disappear…

Hmmm, I have an iPAD 2021 (specifically because it has a headphone jack) with IOS 16.2 and a legacy Apogee JAM that works great on my clunky older iPAD mini running lower IOS. Still no input monitoring with iPAD and 16.2.

However, my iPhone with 16.2 DOES see the JAM! Sadly there is no headphone jack on that phone!

APPLE? Are you reading this? Fix the iPAD too!

This is extremely aggravating. After the update, all I hear is static when playing thru my iRig. I am a professional musician on the weekends and this has extremely hampered me keeping up w the material I need to learn. Especially with the holidays approaching. I reinstalled amplitude a few times, having to pay for it a second time, before I realized others were having the same issue.
