Audio Message.caf arriving in Messages as empty/filled with silence

My friend texted me an audio message in the Messages app that came in as an "Audio Message.caf" file since it was long in duration. But although the full duration is there (25:55 min, 6.1 MB), her voice is not: it is just low volume fuzzy silence (not perfect flatline silence).

She is running iOS 16 and we haven't encountered this before. She says she doesn't have a source file on her phone (I don't know whether she deleted it or nothing is created?).

Is there any way to fix this on my end? I both rebooted my iPhone X (iOS 15.6.1) and saved the file to my iCloud Drive via the Files app, but neither helped.

Is there a way to avoid this on her end in the future? Is this an iOS 16 bug?

Thanks,

Gary

Hi garysch37,

Thank you for posting in Apple Support Communities! Is sounds like the mic on her device may not have picked up her voice while recording. There are a few steps she can try to possibly resolve this and prevent it from happening in the future.

  1. Restart the iPhone. Check out the steps here: Restart your iPhone - Apple Support
  2. Test the microphone by recording in the Voice Memo app to confirm the microphone is picking up sound. Check out some additional steps here: If the microphones on your iPhone aren't working - Apple Support
  3. Confirm her device is running the latest version of iOS 16 ( iOS 16.0.2). Check out: Update your iPhone or iPad - Apple Support.

Hope that helps!
