Question

Unable to update to iOS 15.7 or 16.0.1

I have a mac and an iPhone SE. When connect t my mac int indicates an update is available, then says "A software update is required to update your iphone. Would you like to download and install this update now"

I am getting an error for update and have already installed Xcode, still failing to install or update

Try to do a direct over the air update to 15.7 and no luck with that. and I cannot find evidence on the phone of update being on the phone

iOS 16.0.1 was never available for an iPhone SE. it was only made available for the iPhone 14 family.
The current iOS version is 16.0.2.

Sorry, i mistyped. it is 16.0.2 that it won't take. Over the air it indicates a possibility of updating to 15.7, when on finder on my mac it shows 16.0.2 ready. The over the ire just fails with no real message except update failed, the mac connected update tries ti install something else (which in the past for challenges pts update, and from the link for more e info for the alert seems to be xcode). If the update were not compatible with the iphone it wouldn't be an option
