I can't import a 4k video into imovie, just comes in as 1080p? What's going on?

How do you import 4k video into imovie? It appears to import fine but only tells me it's at 1080P when it is in fact at 4k 24fps. Can't change it in settings for project. Most frustrating as I have 4k camera but imovie not capable of 4k footage on my mid-2011 imac?

Use 4k or 60 fps video on Mac

In iMovie on Mac, make sure the first clip you add to your project is a 4k or 60 fps video clip.2 The first clip you add to a project determines the format for the entire project.
