Stopping Photos 1.5 app from launching when iPhone plugged in

I have an older macbook (2013 Retina 13" Macbook) running El Capitan.

I want to prevent the Photos app from launching whenever I plug in my iPhone to charge.

I have had no joy with internet searches, which refer me to procedures and features that just don't exist in this setup (such as devices in the Photos side-bar – doesn't show, nothing to adjust).

I can't seem to delete the app (though I have no use for it at all) because it seems to be tied to the operating system.

Does anyone have any clues as to how I can fix this and stop Photos from launching?

MacBook Pro 13″, 10.11

Hello winmarkgraphics,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities.

So that you can stop the Photos app from opening when you connect your iPhone to your computer, please do these steps as follows:

  1. Open Photos on your Mac.
  2. Click Import in the toolbar at the top of the Photos window.
  3. Connect a camera, your iPad, iPhone or other iOS device to the computer with a USB cable and make sure the device is turned on. If you’re connecting a digital camera, make sure it’s set to the correct mode for importing photos.
  4. Photos shall display the media on the device. To stop the app from auto-opening whenever you connect this device, untick the box next to “Open Photos for this device” at the top (you may need to click the Action button to reveal this option).

Let us know if you have further questions.

Take care.

Sorry, this doesn't work either; I suspect because the versions I'm grappling with are much older versions. Thanks for the suggestions, Old Toad, but nothing remotely similar appears on these applications in this situation.

But never mind, I have found a way to do what I needed in another workaround (creating a new library got rid of the issue).

Time to put this thread to bed I think!

Thank you for answering green500, but THIS DOES NOT WORK. Many internet searches have come up with this suggestion and pictures of the screens, but they must relate to newer software, not the one described. I am presuming it is because of the age of the Photos application (v1.5) or the older operating system (El Capitan).

Following your procedure, Photos does NOT display the connected device (Itunes does, but that's another story), nor any of its media, let alone any tickbox saying “Open Photos for this device”.

I have since solved the issue by creating a new library, so I'm past the hurdle; but your suggestions have no relevance to this older software it seems.

Thanks, Bruce
