Watch won't leave the Apple screen and the battery is very warm

We have updated our iPhone to the most recent iOS and have turned the watch off completely several times but when we turn the watch back on it won;t turn on. When we go to the Apple watch ap on the phone it is saying the watch isn't turned on and in range and can't find it when the watch is sitting right next to the phone.
