I have a 24 inch Imac and want to restore it as I will be selling it. I am unable to turn off find my mac, a system preference password is needed and the password that unlocks the computer will not work for this request. What is the system preference password?

The System Preferences Password is normally not required as it would usually be the Computer Password used to Start the Computer.
Exceptions are Startup Disk, Security and Privacy to make adjustments in Privacy tab, User and Groups when Adding, removing or elevating or downgrading an account and opening the Password applet
FWIW, there is no "System Preferences Password" per se. You unlock any System Preference that requires a password with your Admin account password.
To add the " Find my Mac " feature is housed in Internet Accounts which resides in System Preferences
