Is it bad for my MacBook Air if it is left plugged in most/all of the time?

Not at all if you have your Battery preferences set to optimize charging and actually even if you don't.

The charger will only charge until the battery is "full" then will switch off and the charger will power the Mac exclusively.

With Optimized charging, eventually it will learn that you use the Mac plugged in most or all the time an will eventually limit battery charging to 80% to protect the battery. At this point, whenever you know you will go out for a period where you may need the full 100%, you simply tell the Mac to charge to full.
