Spotify issue on apple watch 8 GPS + Celular

I have an issue with Spotify on my new watch 8 GPS+Celular.

The issue - Spotify only plays 1 song and then cuts off. I noticed this when I was out on my run and left my phone at home (obviously). I could not manage to make it work whilst I was out. I managed to make it work briefly when I came back home but the same happened but this time it cut off in the middle of the song.

After that I tried:

  • Called my mobile provider to make sure everything works well at their end. I can receive and make calls and messages when away from my phone.
  • I re-downloaded Spotify
  • I downloaded the playlists to my apple watch but they don't show in the watch. The downloads keep loading and nothing happens.
  • I restarted my phone and watch
  • Spotify, watch and phone are up to date
  • I unpaired and paired again the watch with my phone - after this I cannot connect Spotify with my watch at all, even if the phone is close. It just says "Connecting" for a long time (until I give up)
  • Watch shows they are connected to mobile network

Any advice?

Good afternoon restlessterrier,

Congratulations on the purchase of your new Apple Watch Series 8! You've done some great initial troubleshooting to get Spotify to work on your Apple Watch. Did you turn on cellular data and enable the Spotify app to use it in Settings > Cellular on your Apple Watch? In the Settings app, you may also want to scroll down to the Spotify app to see if there are any other specific preferences that need to be set.

If these steps don't resolve your issue, you may want to have an AppleCare technical advisor look in to this with you. Click the link below, choose the phone number for your region from the list, and call when it is convenient.

Hello restlessterrier,

It sounds as if Spotify is aware of the streaming issue with watchOS 9. Whether the "fix" will appear in a Spotify app update or watchOS update is up to the developers. As a general rule, when there is an update to the operating system of any device, it is usually up to the individual app developers to make sure their app is working with the operating system, not the other way around. Hopefully this will be worked out soon. Until then, you can try other streaming services, or continue to download music from Spotify for offline listening. Keep an eye on their website for updates.

Thank you for your reply judysings. All that you mentioned is set up correctly. I remember when I was setting up the watch there was a notification in the Spotify app saying something like "Streaming issue with ios9. There is a bug in ios9 that affects streaming and that people should download the music to play offline. (Which I did but it still doesn't solve the streaming issue). So this to me looks like Apple's problem with the update.

I messaged apple support on Twitter and they basically blamed app developer and told me to get in touch with them. I also messaged Spotify and they were at least a bit helpful showing interest in solving this. I'm really crossed because this should be solved between them, not telling end user solving their issues.
