What is “Other System Data” and why have I got so much?

My system data and other system data were 5.1 Gb and 5.6 Gb on my old iPhone SE 64 Gb. (SW version 13.5.1)

Today, on setting up my new iPhone 13 (256 Gb), SW version 15.5, I now have 9.1 Gb iOS and 44.0 Gb Other System Data!

This is surely insane! What is happening here??

Hi VonB63,

It sounds like you have a large amount of space marked as "Other" on your iPhone and we want to help.

Normally, this should be cached data that's cleared automatically. If you're still seeing this Other category extremely large and you're low on storage, try following the recommendations here:

How to check the storage on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch
