hey siri only works with airpods, not with macbook

macbook pro monterey 12.6 when my airpods are connected via bluetooth, "hey siri" works. when the airpods are not connected, "hey siri" doesn't work. what am i doing wrong?

Then when I go into the audio settings and change the "Audio In" to the microphone of my mac instead of the microphone on the AirPods (that i automatically connects to) the audio quality of what ever show I am watching suddenly gets a lot better. It seems weird that the audio quality suffers from the microphone being connected. I guess i could live with that, but then is there a way to make sure that the microphone on the AirPods aren't automatically connected to ensure better sound quality?

Problems with airpod pros randomly connecting I'm having problems with sound on my Mac Pro running Monterey. If my airpods are near the laptop they reguarly connect, switch the output to the airpods and mute the microphone. This occurs even when they're in their charge case. Anyone know of a fix? It's a big problem when I'm trying to have meetings.
