Since I can't delete th e app, how can I hide it so as not to be bothered by MESSAGES while on the computer

Go to System Preferences > Notifications. Select the Messages app in the left window, and then, in the right-hand side remove all of the tick marks for all of the options. Also move the slider for the "Allow Notifications" option to off.
... at least this is how it would be done with macOS Monterey. You posted in the Catalina area, but your byline states that your notebook is running OS X El Capitan. Which exact version is it actually running?
