iPad FaceTime connection issues since iOS15.7 update

My iPad is at end of update life as of this month. I can’t update to iOS16 and have just updated to iOS15.7.

I’ve been making FaceTime calls absolutely fine on it for years. However, since the last update, not all FaceTime calls to me ring on my iPad, but do on my iPhone (also on iOS15.7). I also can’t maintain a stable connection on a call with bad picture quality and the exclamation sign appearing every few minutes. My iPhone has none of these issues and is on the same Wi-Fi . Is this an update issue or something I can fix? Also, it did go through the cynical part of my head that since my iPad is effectively end of life in Apples eyes, that this might be their way to encourage me to buy a new one. I’m aware of the updates they issued to reduce battery capabilities. Any thoughts?

Hi EvilOctopus,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities.

Do you have issues with any other apps that require a strong internet connection? For instance, a streaming app?

We ask because if for some reason the iPad is not processing the network speed you will see reduced quality FaceTime calls as mentionted here: If you can't make or receive a FaceTime call on your iPhone or iPad - Apple Support

"Use a fast connection to avoid sound quality issues with FaceTime

If your cellular connection or Wi-Fi network runs slowly, or other users stream audio or video on the same Wi-Fi network, you might have these issues:

  • Connection alerts or unable to connect
  • Choppy video calls
  • Black screen
  • Dropped calls

Make sure that both you and the person that you call use a fast Wi-Fi or cellular connection. If you use Wi-Fi, FaceTime requires a broadband connection."

If other apps that stream video seem to work without issue, reach out to us directly here: Get Support

We hope this helps.

Cheers!
