MacMini 2018 on macOS version 12.6 sluggish

Since the last update, my Mac has been super sluggish when I wake it up with the fan running full blast and getting very hot and using most of the 8Gb of memory... In particular I noticed 2 processes are taking most of the memory:

rtcereportingd 4gb

fileproviderd 3gb

I did not enable home sharing... I exited google drive, and I haven't used iCloud storage from my Mac in a long time...

Restarting does not solve the problem.

After a while things get back to normal until I let it go to sleep and wake it up again.

Still: even now that it is back to "normal", those two processes are still taking that much memory (also clearly some of it has been swapped out). Still, for a machine doing nothing much right now, 7Gb are shown as used with 1 gb of cached files and 5.4gb of swap used... that does not seem logical.

Anyway to debug this and clear this situation (making sire all non necessary processes are not restarted on restart?

Finding so far:

  • I logged out all the users asking to not restart anything that was running
  • when I logged in to one of the other users, got a message saying that themas was going to optimize and that will make the machine sluggish.... I let it do its things for a while then rebooted
  • after that for couple of days things were ok... but todays again the machine dead slow fan full speed ...

This time the process taking all the CPU was fileproviderd... more research mention about google drive... I always turn off file sync and quit google drive... but apparently that/s not sufficient... I had to disconnect my Mac from google drive, and quit it... but even then the google drive processes continued running.... I add to kill all of them one by one, and then I uninstalled it (moved the app to the trash and emptied the trash)... and finally the fan calmed down... Rebooted and now all is fast again...

We'll see how long that lasts... I'll update if this comes back.

rtcereportingd 4gb - refer to link and it appears to calling Home to Apple Reporting some Crash

fileproviderd 3gb refer to image below and only using very small amount to Memory / CPU

1 - Restart in Safe Mode. This will perform a Disk Repair, clear cache files and only load Apple Software, extensions and fonts. The boot up will be slow and can take some time - Normal.

2 - Does the issue present in this mode ?

3 - Sometimes a Safe Boot followed by a Normal Boot will just put things right.

4 - If not - there could be something in the main User Account playing up. To further isolate this - Set up users, guests, and groups on Mac. Then log out of the Main User account and log into the dummy account and test again if the issue persists.

5 - If the issue is present in the dummy account - then, this appears to be a System Wide issue on the computer.

6 - Understand, we are all working Remotely from all around the world.

Therefore, we do not have the On-Hands experience the User ( you ) has with this computer.

The next best thing for us to having a semi - actual On-Hand experience on this computer is to follow the steps below

Download the Application Etrecheck directly from the Developer.
