Can I have SIM and eSIM from different carriers on my iPhone?

Hi,

I am looking at purchasing iphone 14. I now need two numbers on the one phone ( one for my new business) so have been looking at esim. I currently have a sim only plan with O2 which supports esim. If I keep this sim can I buy a cheap sim only plan from a carrier that doesn’t support esim? O2 rates for second sim are more expensive than some other carriers. Have that one as the physical sim and change my O2 sim to an esim? I’m assuming this will work if the iphone is unlocked?

Am I right in thinking I will then be able to have two WhatsApp accounts, one with each number?

is it easy to switch between the two numbers or is it a faff?

Thanks

Outside the USA, iPhone 14 supports eSim plus nano-SIM , or two eSIMs so yes your plan sounds feasible.

Using Dual SIM with an eSIM – Apple Support (UK)

As you can only have one Whatsapp app on the phone, you would have to sign out of one account and back into the other.

As there seems to be no sign-out you may have to delete the app and install it again, each time backing up chats to iCloud and restoring the other account's iCloud chat backup. It's bad enough swapping SIMs from one phon to another and losing chat history. So yes I would imagine it is a faff.

As there is only one "you" I don't see the reason for two accounts, people will Whatsapp you based on their known contact they have for you.

Thanks for the advice. Due to the nature of my business I know I will get messages and calls out of hours so the two numbers was to be able to have a holding message on so my weekends aren’t full of people trying to contact me. Might be easier to have the one number and just have business WhatsApp on it. I don’t want the faff of having two phones either!
