Do I need external drive?

I know this question has been asked a million times, but here I go. Working on a Mac Studio with 1TB internal storage. I have been told that most external drives will not be as fast. True/False? Also I have always assumed it is better not to have the FCP library on the same drive as the operating system. Thoughts? If I do go with a larger SSD external desktop drive, any recommendations?

Thanks to all.

Cheers.

Depending on the complexity of your projects you can also use cheap USB 3.0 HDDs perfectly well.

A 4TB Seagate will cost under £90 . . . a 2TB around £60.

I have got a couple of SSDs but I never use them as my 2TB portable HDDs perform well enough for all my requirements.
