I’m in Paris and I am using the same charging cable and plug voltage converter my iMac will accept a charge. The same plug converters and cables work fine on my phones and iPads.

Are you using the same power supply as you used for that Mac in the past? It should work. Power supplies designed for the iPhone and iPad may not provide adequate power for the Mac.
No voltage conversion is necessary. Apple power supplies are universal. You just need a plug adapter.
