iPhone 14 Pro Max not connecting on 5G

My iPhone 14 Pro Max will only work when connected to 5G+. If it switches to 5G I can’t connect to the internet, make phone calls, text, or use any app that needs to be connected. Is anybody else having this problem? Is there a fix?

I have the same issue along with thousands of others and going through all of what’s in that article.

Testing on the network with it next to iPhone 12 Pro connected to 5g and the 14 won’t connect or bounces all over and horrible service. Not att problem but with iOS or the 14 pro modem being defective.

Hey there, Jguyatx,

Thanks for visiting the Apple Support Communities. To get started, please review the details outlined in the Apple Support article Use 5G with your iPhone - Apple Support, which provides the following information on when you'll see 5G versus 5G+:

Understand the 5G icons in the status bar

When you're in an area with 5G coverage for your carrier and your 5G cellular plan has been activated, you'll see a 5G icon in the status bar of your iPhone:

5G: The 5G status-bar icon.
Your carrier's 5G network is available, and your iPhone can connect to the internet over that network (not available in all countries or regions).2

Your carrier’s 5G+, 5G UW, or 5G UC network is available, which can include your carrier’s higher frequency version of 5G. Your iPhone can connect to the internet over that network (not available in all countries or regions).2

If you're having issues using your iPhone over one of the networks, your carrier may not have that specific coverage in the area you are located. If you should have that service, we can suggest troubleshooting your connectivity. Guidance on how to do that can be found here: If you see No Service, Searching, or SOS on your iPhone or iPad - Apple Support. Even though the title doesn't quite match the issue you're having, the steps included can address a variety of issues connecting to your carrier's network.

Best.

Just off the phone with Apple support, again, elevated level, for the second time. I have both ATT as primary voice and data, and VERIZON as secondary voice and data. Both would loose data connectivity randomly while moving around my area, very frustrating and expensive when you do not receive mission critical e-Mails. Apple support at the moment had me force both lines to LTE in the setup. I’m not very happy at the moment, to early to tell if it will actually work.

Discussion with ATT, they literally just laughed and told me to contact Apple.

The flag ship phone and we have buggy software or hardware that no one is willing to admit to. 🤬🤬🤬🤬

I will try the ATT route again in person at one of their stores. The problem, I believe is either SW or hardware, the unit will connect on 5G with either carrier as long as you stay in a 5G area, it will not downgrade or reconnect when leaving/re-entering 5G, for me this is on both carriers, ATT and Verizon. Apple did admit that they have some known issues but would not provide details. I was hoping the 16.1.1 that was released yesterday would fix it, no luck yet.

Never mind the black Lock Screen issue, that may be fixed now.

Apple is using Qualcomm modems:

Apple has switched to Qualcomm’s latest 5G modem across their product line. This is surely frustrating to Apple’s silicon team, who have been working for years (first with Intel, and then with their newly acquired in-house team) to produce their own 5G modem. They haven’t succeeded, so Qualcomm gets the win with their probably-very-expensive 4 nanometer part. The upside for Apple is that the new X65 supports band 53, Globalstar’s 2.4 GHz frequency for satellite communications.

This is the same modem used by Samsung and other Android devices.
