iMac 2017 - sockets

Hi all, I have the above imac and want to keep my ipad charged while it is next to the imac. Should I be able to use the iMac usb ports?

The reason I ask is because when I plug my ipad into my imac via the usb port I get 'Not Charging' on the ipad.

Most iPads require higher wattage to charge them and your Typical USB 3 ports (not Thunderbolt or USBC) only provide (mA): 500 of power.

How much power your iPad needs is ultimately up to the iPad's technical specifications, and not necessarily the iMac's (see above power draw limit on USB 3 ports).

Hi, thanks for that reply. I have been having a further play around and I found that my other iPads and iPhones charged ok from the iMac USB. It was just my old iPad mini that didn't. I found that it actually WAS charging but the notification on the home page indicated 'Not Charging'. when it actually was. Obviously the notification is wrong. I can live with that !! Thanks again.
