Unix Executable File message on harddrive

I have photos on external hard drive that I have been sorting. Suddenly I am getting Unix Executable File instead of photos. What do I do?

That usually means some confusion around the file type. That confusion might be a caching issue or error—reboot through Safe Mode to rebuild caches—or it might be a corruption with the storage volume, or it might be failing storage hardware.

Try Safe Mode first: Start up your Mac in safe mode - Apple Support

Then update to macOS 11.7.
