Extremely Loud Outgoing Call Ringtone

When I call someone and have my airpods in, it is extremely loud, to the point where I have to take them out. Changing my volume on the side of my phone (which I have also change ringer volume) doesn’t change this. How can I turn it down? Again this is not when someone calls me, but when I call someone and wait for them to pick up.

Hi llauren333,

Customizing your audio settings could help with this. The following article will walk you through the steps: Customize headphone audio levels on your iPhone or iPad

Set up Headphone Accommodations

1. Check that you have the latest version of iOS or iPadOS.
2. Go to Settings > Accessibility > Audio/Visual > Headphone Accommodations. Turn on Headphone Accommodations.
3. Choose how you want to apply your custom audio settings:
• Turn on Phone to apply these settings to phone calls, FaceTime calls, and any third-party video call apps.
• Turn on Media to apply these settings to music, movies, podcasts, audiobooks, Siri, voicemail, and Live Listen.
4. Customize your headphone audio settings:
Use Custom Audio Setup. You’ll listen to audio samples and choose which ones sound better to you. Then you can apply the custom settings suggested based on your choices.
Use your audiogram data.
Manually adjust audio settings.

Best regards.

I have this problem too, but when using the normal speaker held to my ear (iPhone 14 Pro, iOS 16.0.3). The only fix I've found is to switch to the speakerphone for just a second, and then turn it off. After that, the ringing sound from the earpiece goes back to a normal level, but I have to do this every time.

Anyone else seeing this?

This is happening to me as well and I can’t figure out how to fix it. I have an iPhone 13 Pro and when I call someone, people across the room can hear the ringing (while I’m waiting for my call to be answered) even though the phone is up to my ear. It’s so loud!! The volume buttons on the side of my phone don’t change the ringing volume. How do I fix this so it rings at a normal volume??

The wifi calling is an interesting callout -- unfortunately I need to use that as I have bad reception where I am, so it's not a workable solution. However, I am able to resolve the issue now by quickly switching to speaker and back to earpiece when I make an outgoing call. Not great but at least not going to lose my hearing now.
