i would like to reset the watch however during the pairing it asks for an upgrade, when i accept it asking for the iCloud address which was used to set it up for the 1st time.
the issue is i have no longer access to that ID and i would like to link it to my current iCloud id

If you can't remember/gain access to the apple id that paired the watch to the phone.Take the watch and it's receipt with the serial number along with some photo id and any other proof of ownership to an Apple Store and request that they remove the Activation Lock for you.
