Has my microphone been hacked? Please help!

This afternoon my phone was sitting next to me on my desk with the screen locked not being used. The screen lights up suddenly, and I hear voices in a foreign language (it sounded Asian) talking and then laughing. The orange microphone light was on at the top front of the phone and the talking stopped when I picked up my phone. I began to check through my apps I had open in the background, thinking maybe I had a video or music left open, but they were all closed. It’s really freaked me out. My phone has never “jailbreaked” I believe the term is (sorry I might have that wrong). Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks for visiting the Apple Support Communities, SH1988,

From what you've described, it sounds like maybe an app was playing audio in the background. That said, while we cannot be certain of this, we can take steps to ensure that nothing is amiss with your device.

To get started, we recommend:

  1. Closing all open apps: Close an app on your iPhone or iPod touch - Apple Support
  2. Restarting your iPhone: Restart your iPhone - Apple Support

These steps might seem like simple ones to take, but they can often resolve a variety of issues.

If you continue to hear an unexpected audio please do not hesitate to let us know.

Have a wonderful weekend.
