why are files greyed out and empty

i have several files on my imac that are greyed out. When i try to move or delete them I get message that they are in use by another app and if i move them it may cause problems.

I don't recall but I MAY have been simply trying to relocate them when it occurred.

How can I resolve and why did this happen?

Oh and info states that they are empty.
