Is the storage unit in MacBook Air upgradeable? If so which SSDs 1TB are supported? Other than Apple and OWC which other units are supported?

If the model ID is 7,2, it may be possible. Your best choice would be OWC

FWIW, the "storage unit" is far more than that. It is also the place where your operating system resides and, in fact, it is what makes your computer do anything and everything. Storage is secondary. And, your 2017 should be Intel rather than silicon.

Instead of attempting an internal upgrade, have you considered using an external SSD for additional storage? MacBook Air was never designed to be repaired or upgraded by the end-user, and these modifications have great risk of damage or permanent failure to the Mac.

Something like the LaCie 1TB Mobile SSD Secure USB-C Drive - Gray - Apple, and a USB-C to USB-A 3.1 cable, such as this one, for compatibility with your older generation Mac, would be a fast, easy, and risk-free solution for additional fast storage.
