Completely annoying. It gives you the option to “set as current”, but then changes at random on its own. I’ve tried everything to keep it on my CHOSEN wallpaper to no avail. Definitely something that needs fixed.

I have never been compelled to say that I hate something but the new iPhone update with the stupid customizable wallpaper is so inconvenient. There is no option to just set it and leave it. If u hold it down just too long it changes to customize option. Then it doesn’t even keep the option sometimes Emmy wallpaper turns a dull color or adds blank boxes.
oh and my phone just calls people. Never has that happened before but yet here it is.
apple please fix this max I hate being a prisoner of your bugs.
I purely hate the wallpape per update too. First of all… it was good as it was the only thing I really care for is assign calendar and reminders on that screen. Plus I finally set it up and it keep changing!
Mine was changing unexpectedly because Focus Mode's Do Not Disturb mode had been set to use a specific lock screen. I was not aware that I had done this. Removing that screen from Settings>Focus>Do Not Disturb>Customized Screens cleared it right up.
I was finally able to fix this - when i had set my new wallpaper it had kept the old one and wouldn’t let me delete it - i had to pull up the old wallpaper (hold on Lock Screen), customize it, and then delete any others so there was nothing to change it to.
im sorry to ask, but How in the works do you Delete any others (Wallpaper) you may have including the DEFAULT one? ALSO-How do I Delete any FOCUS settings so they are Not the Wallpaper Issue anymore? I apologize. Sometimes, I think I could benefit from a Step by Step Guide or a How To Video. TÍA and Happy New Year!
Hey everybody this reply from Eric Ullman is a really good solution and you will realize it is a new functionality really interesting iOS 16 offers now you can use a different set of apps and screens depending on your activities. Awesome and thanks @eric ullman
I’m having the same issue I’ve tried changing it from the Lock Screen tried going into settings and changing it also done a hard restart and every single time I put the thing on charge it changes the wallpaper back to an old wallpaper I used to use it’s a right pain only started happening his this last bloody up date
It’s the most irritating part of this smart phone. It’s too smart, and does things on its own without any human contact. Apple need to sort this glitch out as I’m constantly having to revert back to my chosen wallpaper theme.
My wall paper was fine, just what I had chosen. Now it does not respond to my request for it to remain the same! Why does Apple have to fix something that doesn’t need fixing? Why not keep your customers happy???
The issues seams to be adding your preferred wallpaper to a focus. If you add it, it’s going to always trigger that particular focus, being permanently associated to it.
In my case I had added my favorite wallpaper to a focus related to work. That wallpaper became exclusively linked to that focus, so any time I deactivate that focus, instead of maintaining that wallpaper, that should also be my default one, it changed to another wallpaper.
Once you remove the wallpaper from the focus mode, or choose a different one to replace it, the issue stops.
I think Apple could do something other than simply linking them permanently to a focus mode.
Me too bloody Home Screen I’m full of tricks really happy to keep on trying to reset my picture
plenty of time on my hands
never know how I fixed it !!
only around 8 minutes of swearing
phone doesn’t hear that though haha

Hello ~ Well… I can’t help you there as I am just a fellow user like yourself. Apple does however give you a place to leave them feedback…

so how do you replicate your ‘normal’ screen/wallpaper setup to carry over to the night mode if you switch to night-time/focus mode?
Have you tried going to Settings>Focus>Sleep>Customize Screens. If any of the pictures of screens just above that have a little minus sign in the upper left corner, tap on that. It will remove any customizations including different wallpaper. Also, you may want to tap on Options and then turn off Sleep Screen.
In my case, I only have a custom screen for my watch but, if you had one for the phone, you'd see a similar minus sign.
