Apple TV app and the Watch Next feature

Why has my Apple TV app quit recognizing my BritBox and Acorn subscriptions even though both subscriptions are through iTunes? The Apple TV app no longer adds a BritBox or Acorn TV series to the watch next list?

Up until about a short time ago, both Acorn and BritBox TV series would show what episode of each series was "Up Next" on the Apple TV app. When I clicked on the next episode in a series on the Apple TV app, streaming would automatically switch to the streaming service carrying the episode I wished to watch. When I click on the next show in a series to watch now, I get a screen asking me to join the service (either Acorn or BritBox) which streams the series. The Apple TV app will still automatically keep track of the episodes I watch on Amazon Prime, PBS, Disney+ and Hulu. When I check my subscriptions to Acorn and BritBox in iTunes, I am subscribed and paid up until sometime next year. When I check the setting for those services, I am logged into both. I cannot get the "Up Next" feature in the Apple TV app to allow me to watch the next episode in a series on either Acorn or BritBox.

Try searching for the TV show of choice in the Apple TV app, to access the Details page for that show. (Up Next would try to start the episode directly, so that is not useful, unless you click-and-hold for the contextual menu.) Scroll down to How to Watch, then verify if the intended content provider is selected. Change it if needed.

The Apple TV app might have gotten confused if episode numbering differentiates between content providers, or if unreleased episodes are listed early or late – causing a unintended content provider to rise as default. In such cases, it is worth trying the content provider app directly, hopefully temporarily.

Please differentiate between (1) subscriptions to Apple TV Channels inside the Apple TV app, and (2) subscriptions as started outside the Apple TV app, for use in the separate content provider app. These types of subscriptions have different terms and conditions, different perks and limitations, and are not exchangeable as such. BritBox and Acorn TV are available in both ways, with either way possible to have billing through Apple.

Up Next would list movies and TV shows “in progress”. Listings would not show programs for which you have seen the latest episode, until a new episode appears. TV shows may disappear from Up Next if the content provider removes it from their catalog.

BritBox from the separate content provider app would not connect to the TV app for inclusion in Up Next. BritBox from the Apple TV Channels would be supported for Up Next.
