Apple TV and TCL TV

Fairly frequently, at least once a month, my Apple TV goes bonkers. The screen flashes with crazy colors and even though you can see the Apple TV menu, even though it’s flashing quickly, you can’t do anything with the TV and it’s impossible to use.

I have noticed it SEEMS to happen on updates to the Apple TV software and I of course turned the automatic updates off after I noticed that.

A few months ago, I bought a new Apple TV, thinking I had a bad one. I took that one upstairs, connected it to that TV, and my wife uses it without issue. We have two other Apple TV’s also and NONE OF THOSE have had any issues such as that even though they update automatically.

However, I’m still having the same issue with the newest Apple TV on the main TV (Series 6 TCL) downstairs. It’s happened 3 times this week.

This always requires a complete reset, which isn’t easy because the screen continues to flash during the reset. Since the original Apple TV and the others do not have that issue since I connected them to other TV’s, I’m left with a weird conclusion.

I’ve changed HDMI cable’s and checked all of my settings which seem not to be the issue.

Any thoughts and has anyone else had such issues?

Hey there stmcld,

From what you described testing two different Apple TV models on your main TV set, but having no issues when testing them on a different TV, along with ruling out HDMI cables, the common factor is the TV set itself.

While you may need to contact TCL Support regarding this behavior along with letting them know how you narrowed it down to the TV set itself, we wanted to ask a few other questions:

  1. You mentioned that your other Apple TV devices are now up to date, but we weren't sure about the newest one you purchased. Are all Apple TV devices now fully up to date? For compatible models, the latest version is tvOS 16.0. You can verify this within Settings > General > About. Here's a link that'll show how to Update your Apple TV.
  2. You may also need to contact TCL Support regarding the steps, but have you already checked for the latest firmware update for the TV with the issue?
  3. Do other devices connected to the same HDMI port on your main TV that on which you connect your Apple TV device having any issues?
  4. Have you tested the same Apple TV device on a different HDMI port on the same affected TV?

Cheers.

Hi stmcld,

If the issue is not occurring when the Apple TV is connected to a different HDMI port on the same TV, then that isolates the issue to that specific port. If it has to be connected to that port and cannot be switched to another on, then we'd recommend reaching back out to the manufacture to let them know what is occurring with that specific port.

Best regards
