Can I connect Thunderbolt 3 or USB-C device to a Thunderbolt 2 port

Can I connect Thunderbolt 3 or USB-C device to a Thunderbolt 2 port?

I have an old Mac Air 2015 that has a Thunderbolt 2 port. I want to connect it to my new iPhone using the new USB-C to lighting cable.

Is there an adaptor to convert that?

You need a USB-C to USB-A adapter or simply get a USB-A to Lightning cable. With the latter you need to make sure it passes data and not simply a charging cable. The Lightning to USB-A cable that Apple sells will work just fine.

Apple cable:

Lightning to USB Cable (1 m) - Apple

Simple USB-C to USB-A adapters can be found on Amazon by searching "usb-c to usb-a adapter". As an example:

Just make sure the adapting "direction" is like this example.

FWIW, the Thunderbolt port on the 2017 MacBook Air can only be used with Thunderbolt devices.
