winmail.dat - any way to fix this issue from the mac (receiver) side?

I am having exactly the same problem as the message (copied below) that was posted on Sep 1, 2019 8:55 AM.

The solution at the time was "Please read If your email contains a winmail.dat attachment - Apple Support. " That link currently returns a "Page Not Found" error.

My two users are on MacOS 10.14.6 and Apple Mail 12.4. They are both using the same Google Workspaces account as their email provider, and both were set up by clicking "Google" in the "Internet Accounts" window in "System Preferences".

Any suggestions are welcome.

------------------------------

A user, probably using Outlook on a PC is sending a message to two users on Macs, running the same version of Mac OSX and the same version of the Apple mail client Mail.app. One of the Mac users receives the message as intended with formatted text and attachments showing up normally. The other Mac user receives the message and can see only the body text of the message and any attachments or other formatted text in the messages shows up as a single "winmail.dat" attachment.

The two Mac users have combed through every available setting in Mail>Preferences as well as the settable view options in the app but can not find any discrepancy that accounts for this, nor any way to resolve the issue. One user can read the incoming message normally, the other user is essentially out of luck.

Yes, thanks! But I'm still hoping for a fix to the Apple Mail.problem.

The Microsoft mail server involved here is misconfigured and is sending out a proprietary- and subject-to-change Microsoft message format message.

The sender of the message can override this setting, or the sending IT can fix this on the mail server, or you can use a tool to read the message.

Basically, this is an Outlook-to-Outlook-format mail message leaking out further than it should have.

The “fix” here is with Microsoft; with the sender.

Or to switch to and use the Outlook client and its TNEF support, as the receiver.

Or use a third-party TNEF-decoding tool.

On the problem Mac...

Are you running any VPN, Anti-Virus, or Cleaning apps?

Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at startup), does the problem occur in Safe Mode?

Safe mode attempts to repair Disks & clears lots of caches, so if Safe Mode works try again in regular boot.

If you have no POP accounts & they’re all IMAP accounts then in Mail’s Mailbox menu choose Rebuild.

NO

Do I need to have the sender send the email while I am in Safe Mode?

There is one POP account and one IMAP account. The user has sent the message to both of those accounts, and both show the attachment as winmail.dat.

If it's a problem with the sending mail server, that doesn't seem to explain why two recipients with identical configurations are getting different results

Unless both recipients are sharing an email address, because the sender can select the sending behavior on a per-recipient basis. Here assuming Outlook is not in use by either recipient, too.

No.

There is one POP account and one IMAP account.

Danger with a POP account & Rebuild, is that normally POP accounts remove the eMail from the Server when downloaded & Rebuild will remove any POP eMails that are already downloaded, leaving you with Zero POP eMails.
