Dealing with a MS Word document on a Mac

I need to download and edit a legal document from a UK Government website. They appear to believe only Microsoft exists because the document is not available for Macs. I have a MS Word reader on my Mac but I am not aware that I can do anything other than view the downloaded Word document. It might be possible to save it as a PDF but I would appreciate any advice on whether it is possible to edit this document in any way and then upload it back to the Government website. I really would like to avoid having to pay anything to Microsoft to be able to get this done. Thanks

A Word document is platform agnostic and MS Office is still the standard for corporate word-processing solutions. If the source is producing it in MS Word, and you are expected to edit and resubmit it to them, then you should be using MS Word yourself which is available on macOS as either the subscription Microsoft 365, or the single-purchase Office 2021 for Mac. That way, you are opening, editing, and saving that MS Word document entirely in its native document format.

There are other alternatives to using MS Word, some clones, and some not. They come with learning curves, and may not produce a resulting Word document that is 100% accurate to the UK Government's expectations.
