iphone 14 pro max - Cannot exit out of apps randomly

4 or 5 times now I've been in an app and when I swipe up to exit the app, I can't leave the app. The only work around seems to be to hit the power button to put the phone to sleep, hit the button again, faceid back in to the phone and then I swipe up/exit the app. Needless to say it's annoying.

I've only been on my iPhone 14 Pro Max for just under two weeks but this has happened like ever other day. It occurred with 16.0.2 and is still occurring with 16.0.3. Can confirm that a restart does nothing to fix the problem as I restarted the phone today due to a different issue and minutes later this issue occurred again. Can confirm its happened with Apple Maps, Apple Mail and Messages apps. Trying to recall if its occurred with any third party apps but unsure. I also have turned off the always on display as I don't like how it appears to drain the battery without me feeling its providing me a big enough benefit.

If you and others with the Apple cases are having these touch problems sounds like the case design is just poor or the touch zone is just too narrowly picked up from the edge. In my situation I use the Pitaka MagEZ Case 3 which is super thin and there is no edge along the top and bottom of the phone so I can easily touch the edge to initiate the pull down or swipe up. Apple really should take in to consideration people using beefier cases to expand that touch field to recognize the edge swipe might not be able to be initiated from the screen edge.

I have the Apple case (iPhone 14 Pro Max Leather Case with MagSafe) and I'm having the same problem. I frequently cannot get "swipe up" to work and have to reset to the home screen. I cannot get "swipe down" from the top to work without pulling my phone case partly off of the phone.

Are others having trouble with this expensive Apple case? Is there a fix?

Honestly I didn't think it was a hardware issue. Posting this I was anticipating some corroboration that other users were experiencing the same issue, the more users that have a problem the more likely it will be fixed. . Not that this might be only a iPhone 14 problem, maybe its more wide spread across all iOS 16.

If I don't get more user confirmation than would make sense that I've got some odd hardware issue!

Yes this is happening to my new 14 Pro (12/29/22) on many apps. I cannot escape the app unless I shut down the iPhone and restart. Beyond annoying. I, like you, feel that this is an IOS issue that Apple will correct but I honestly think this also could be an issue that the specific App developer needs to address.

As you know many Apps are not being kept “up to date” with every IOS update. I’ll visit the genius bar on Monday and get their take on this issue and if it’s hardware related.

BECAUSE, when an app encounters a problem and freezes, you must first close the app to reopen the app. WHY are you answering question which you have no ability to answer correctly? You are completely incorrect about force closing an app using more energy. Having 10 apps suspended for 12 hours will never use more energy or data on ANY phone or computer than if you had just closed them all and let the processor idle down completely. With the size of modern applications increasing daily it’s more an issue of availability RAM or cpu cache than it is an issue of energy use. Bottom line…if an app freezes you can either completely hard-restart the device or simply swipe up and close the single application.
