Safari problem on El Capitan

I'm re-posting this as the original thread seemed to disappear:

A friend is running an iMac mid 2007. The last effective OS was El Capitain for that model of iMac. She's been getting this pop-up for months now, and can't figure out what is causing it or what to do. See attached 'pop-up'.

I'm trying to help her solve this. It's keeping her from Browsing the web. The available Firefox won't run on this older OS. and I can't just re-install her Safari. I'd need to re-install El Capitain, which I'm not sure is possible.

Any suggestions would be most appreciated ...

THEN Neil responded with a possible solution:

Choose Utilities from the Finder's Go menu, open the Script Editor, and run:

do shell script "curl -k > ~/Downloads/isrgrootx1.der"

Double-click the downloaded certificate and set Keychain Access to always trust it.

But I got this ... which I can't really decipher. I did request the Keychain Access to always trust the certificate ... see attached:

So it hasn't solved the issue yet.

Wondering if anyone, Neil perhaps, as any idea what might be happening and how to fix it?

Ben

I performed something more or less the same as you about a year ago.

I can't be sure from your screenshot if you have done this, but I clicked on the " System" on the left to perform the "Always Trust".

On the 30th of September 2021 the certificates that allow you to connect to various websites expired

you can however download new ones.

Click on the link below,

https://letsencrypt.org/certificates/

Download these two files

ISRG Root X1

Self Signed click on the der to download

And ISRG Root X2

Self signed click on der to download.

Open the Keychain Access app in your Applications> Utility folder.

In the left column highlight System.

Click on File in the menubar and click on Import Items,

select the newly downloaded files in turn and press Open.

Double-click on one of the newly imported certificates, click on the disclosure triangle

and next to When using this certificate: change Use System Defaults to Always Trust.

Do the same for the other certificate.

Restart your mac.
