Do not disturb iOS 16

Since upgrading to iOS 16, the do not disturb function is not working the same for me. Messages, calls, and most apps do not show notifications (as expected) however, gmail and other random apps on my phone are still allowing notifications through. How do I fix this?

Which is why there is a simple on/off switch in the control center. You don’t have to set up anything. The set up features are there because lots of people complained that simple on/off wasn’t enough, they wanted time of day, different schedules for different days, a setting based on location (e.g., at the gym, at work, when driving), etc. So Apple added all of the features that users clamored for. But you can still just turn it on or off.

Back in the Old Days you still had to say what happened when you turned on DND; block everyone, everyone except favorites, everyone except your SO, etc. You still need to do that. Do Not Disturb setup has been made much more flexible, but this has come at the cost of much more complication. To get it working again, do these steps ONCE:

  • Tap Settings
  • Tap Focus
  • Tap on any Focus settings that you will never use and remove them (you can add them back later if you change your mind, and even create new, custom ones)
  • Tap Do Not Disturb
  • Tap People
  • Tap Allow Notifications From
  • If anyone is listed who should not call you when DND is on delete them; if you don’t want any calls from anyone, any time, delete all people
  • Tap the dropdown next to Allow Calls From and choose Allowed People Only
  • Optionally, tap on Apps, then Allow Notifications From and don’t add any apps.

All of the above is a one-time setup. After that, turn DND on or off with the Control Center Focus button. You can optionally set one or more schedules by going to:

Settings/Focus/Do Not Disturb/Set a Schedule.

Bottom line up front: Apple, please bring back the toggle. The current setup is extremely frustrating.

First of all, there is no "modify settings" section under "do not disturb"; there are sections for "allow notifications", "customize screens", "set a schedule", and "focus filters".

However, if you tell Siri to "turn off do not disturb", that will do the trick.

There is one button. It's in the Control Center. See the instructions in the post immediately above yours.

Not helpful. it's easy to get to do not disturb, but turning it off and on globally is now puzzling on iphone 11 ios 16. How many clicks are necessary to block distractions:

  1. focus
  2. do not disturb
  3. choose people to silence notifications from? I probably don't have to do this, but why did they make the decision to have to manually add people instead of choose one or 2 people who you would allow through when it's silenced? This has always been the case, and seems like a much more common use case. (default is "none silenced")
  4. choose apps to allow notifications from, if silenced? (Default "none allowed")
  5. Options is another screen that tells me if silenced notifications are visible, which doesn't help me

Then below that there is a screen for focus filters, that customize how your apps and devices are "notified" when "this" Focus is on, and an option to set a schedule. It includes the scheduled time I had on the phone before ios 16 update, but turns it off. This is the only place where a global option seems to be referenced.

Nowhere do I see an indicator if it is on or not. The first time I encountered this quandry was sitting at a screening where I wanted to turn my phone off without turning it off. I kept touching do not disturb, and all it did was give me these options.

I've sat through a lot of user interface meetings, spec, over the years but have never seen anything so convoluted for such an essential task that you usually need to effect quickly. And on the do not disturb screen it should always give the feedback if it's on or if it's off. I saw feedback flash once when I changed my scheduled time to now, but can't reproduce it.

Please apple please give us back a toggle! In the meantime I'll probably use airplane mode instead ;)

Yes, this was a frequently asked-for feature. So the latest Focus allows you both options, so for example, you can create a “home” focus that blocks calls from your boss.

It’s right there on the Control Center. If you tap on the button with the crescent moon it just toggles it. If you tap to the right of the button on the word “Focus" it lets you select a Focus setting to use.

Thanks for the control center reference. I confess that I have barely used control center. For now this gives me the option to set it on until tonight or for one hour, and I do see the indicator for that. I will also try to set up a different wallpaper image to make it more "in my face." Still, hard finding the time to configure the initial focus settings. I like the app settings, set when using zoom for example, which was easy to set up, but I'm used to just silencing the phone and using zoom on desktop, where notification are unobtrusive without any config required. I like not having my focus settings global to all devices.

I keep a weird schedule. I swipe down from upper right to reach “Find Focus in the Day”. I turn on Do Not Disturb, which turns the opposite color to let me know it is activated. All of my other Apple devices reflect Do Not Disturb, which is cool. I go to bed very late.

And the next morning, my phone rings and wakes me up, which is not cool.

I check and Do Not Disturb is still enabled.

  • There is no setting that turns on Do Not Disturb and leaves it on until I turn it off. Why not?

I have to agree with people here that this is WAY too complex.
