Screen went dark, won’t wake up! iPhone 14

My wife and I both have iPhone 14 Pro’s. My phone has gone dark 3 times and now today hers did. Quick google search turns up a similar problem that recommends a force restart. When mine wouldn’t wake up I connected it to my MacBook and it saw the phone so the phone is still “alive” but the screen is dead. We are both up to date on iOS. What’s up with this issue?

Hi DRC_40,


To clarify, when forcing your iPhone to restart, were these the steps you took?


  1. "Press and quickly release the volume up button.
  2. Press and quickly release the volume down button.
  3. Press and hold the side button.
  4. When the Apple logo appears, release the side button."


If so and there's still no response from the display, move on to the steps below. You'll need access to a computer, but it will reinstall iOS on your iPhone while leaving your data intact.


"If your iPhone turns on but gets stuck during start up


If you see the Apple logo or a red or blue screen during startup, try these steps:

  1. Connect your iPhone to a computer. On a Mac with macOS Catalina, open the Finder. On a Mac with macOS Mojave or earlier, or on a PC, open iTunes. Find out which macOS your Mac is using.
  2. Select your iPhone on your computer.
  3. While your iPhone is connected, follow these steps:
  • On your iPhone 8 or later, including iPhone SE (2nd and 3rd generation): Press and quickly release the volume up button. Press and quickly release the volume down button. Then press and hold the side button.

  • On your iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus: Press and hold the side button and volume down button at the same time.

  1. Keep holding the buttons until you see the recovery mode screen.

On your iPhone 14, press and hold the button on the right side of the phone - It will engage Siri.

Ask Siri to turn up the brightness. A slider will appear on the screen.

Slide to turn up the brightness on the screen.

It won’t stop the issue from happening again, (happened to me, again, this morning) but it works. You won’t have to reboot your phone
