Perhaps the screen brightness is too low, or there is a hardware issue with the laptop. Unfortunately with recent versions of macOS you cannot adjust the screen brightness until you log into a macOS user account. You can try logging in blindly to see whether you can access the brightness controls on the Touchbar or keyboard. You can also try connecting an external display in order to log into the laptop and adjust the brightness of the built-in display. Neither option is easy since sometimes macOS won't let you interact with macOS on the external display if some window is active on the internal display. I can tell you from personal experience both of these methods can be difficult to gain access to the laptop.

If this is an Intel Mac, then you can try an SMC Reset. Make sure to read the instructions carefully since the procedure for the reset has changed for the 2018+ Macs. You can also try a PRAM Reset on an Intel Mac making sure to hold the reset for at least two chimes. These two resets are not available for an M1/M2 Mac with Apple Silicon.

If you have a USB-C Mac, then you can try closing the lid and slowly & gently open the lid to see whether the screen's backlight comes on. Some of the USB-C laptops tend to have the video cable break and opening the lid more than about 45 degrees may cause the backlight to go out.

Most likely you will need to have Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider examine the laptop to provide you with a repair estimate.

FYI, you should always post the exact model of your Mac and version of macOS used when posting on the forums because every model may have their own unique issues and it helps us to provide more specific advice to your particular Mac. You can get the exact model by entering the system number here:
