Travelled abroad - why didn't time adjust automatically?

Travelled abroad - why didn't time adjust automatically?

Went to Switzerland from the UK recently. I noticed that arriving there, and coming back here, the iPhone failed to set itself to the local time. Both times I had to do this manually.

Why was this feature not working like it should?

Thank you.

iPhone X, iOS 15

Hello Abstractman23,

Thanks for posting in Apple Support Communities. We understand that when you travel, the time zone you've traveled to is not automatically adjusted on your iPhone. We'd like to gather more information from you to determine what is causing this behavior.

From what you describe, it sounds like you have "Set Automatically" enabled in Settings > General > Date & Time. Do you have "Setting Time Zone" enabled in Settings > Privacy > Location Services > System Services?

Which version of iOS is this occurring on? Do you have any updates pending? Update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

Do you have a VPN installed on your iPhone?

Let us know! Take care.

Abstractman23,

We're glad to hear the issues are resolved. System Services allows your iPhone to adjust automatically for time zone changes depending on your location. Additional information about how "Set Automatically" works on your iPhone is below:

  • "Set Automatically: iPhone gets the correct time over the network and updates it for the time zone you’re in. Some networks don’t support network time, so in some countries or regions, iPhone may not be able to automatically determine the local time."

This information is from Change the date and time on iPhone - Apple Support.

Have a nice day.

Thank you, I never knew about that setting. It was OFF.

I have now turned it ON, so that when I next go abroad it should adjust automatically.

Surely this is something that should happen automatically, that the time is adjusted to wherever you are. One should not have to dig deep into settings in order to activate something so basic that should just happen on its own.

I am a seasoned iPhone user and have never known about this setting in all these years!

But "Set Automatically" enabled in Settings > General > Date & Time is now OFF.

Aren't these two settings to activate the same function? It's confusing how Apple have done this!

If one is OFF and the other is ON, what will happen?
