How do I back up my Mac when It won’t start
I can’t back up my MacBook air ‘20 prior to repair as it won’t restart, I also have confidential files that need to be removed/encrypted before sending for repair

Files on Macs with Apple silicon or Intel Macs with the Apple T2 Security Chip are already encrypted in hardware:

They are also encrypted if you used FileVault: Use FileVault to encrypt the startup disk on your Mac
If you are unable to power on your Mac its files cannot be accessed.

The time to backup your data is before the computer needs service. Backups ensure your data is retained prior to the computer having problems such as not starting or needing service.
