Unable to change iCloud+ storage plan

Hi,

I experienced a severe issue with iCloud+ storage when running out of available space - my documents got screwed up - very uncool!

I am trying to upgrade my iCloud+ storage plan from 50GB to 200GB, which apparently can only be done from a device and not via icloud.com (like screen time approval of app installations - very inconvenient!).

On my device, I select AppleID from Settings and then iCloud and Manage... From here I select Change storage plan and select 200GB and then click Next.

When asked for my AppleID, I enter it and click Buy, but then it refuses with the reason that my login is incorrect (I am logged in to apple.com with the same ID to write this post!).

That is freaking annoying, so I go to icloud.com and login with the same credentials that had just been rejected! I go to iCloud drive in the hope that I can change the storage plan from here, but it fails to load iCloud drive and puts up an error message.

This problem has persisted for more than a month. I do not know what 'later' means, but I would suppose that it is less than a month!

I can access my iCloud drive from Finder on my Mac, so it works somehow, but it is clear that something is very wrong!

It seems that running out of iCloud drive space breaks it for you - nice feature!

I have disable iCloud-drive replication because it seems to be broken for me ..

Regards

n1dhu9,

We'd like to learn more to see how we can help.

You mentioned your Mac is running macOS X. Which Mac do you have and which exact macOS version is listed in the Apple menu () > About This Mac? Are you entering the password for the same Apple ID that's listed in System Preferences > Apple ID?

Let's also be sure you're following these steps exactly:

How to upgrade on your Mac
1. Choose Apple menu  > System Preferences, then click Apple ID.
2. Click iCloud.
3. Click Manage in the lower-right corner.
4. Click Change Storage Plan or Buy More Storage, and choose a plan.
5. Click Next and enter your Apple ID password.

You'll find these steps and more information here: Upgrade to iCloud+ - Apple Support

Let us know what you find.

Thanks!

Hi n1dhu9,

Thank you for posting in Apple Support Communities! Seems like this issue may be isolated to your Mac itself so let's troubleshoot it a bit. Since attempting to upgrade the storage and getting this error message, has your Mac been restarted? Restarting can help resolve many unexpected issues we face with our devices.

To restart your Mac go to the Apple menu (  ) > Restart.

You can also confirm that your Mac is up to date and running the latest available macOS for your model. To check for any available updates:

  1. Go to the Apple menu (  ) > System Preferences
  2. Tap on Software Update
  3. Tap Update Now or Restart Now to install if an update is available

Hope that helps!

Hi again,

I have a MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2016) running Mac OS Monterey 12.6.

Yes, I am using the same Apple ID - I only have one!

The steps you provide to upgrade iCloud storage are the very same steps that I have now tried a dusin times with the exact same outcome - incorrect password. And it still works fine for logging in to icloud.com (but with the afore mentioned error message for the iCloud Drive part) and appleid.apple.com.

I am using a password manager and am copy-pasting the password, but I have also tried to enter it manually several times.
