Text notifications for replies and follow-ups

Why don’t I receive an audio notifications for EVERY text in an exchange? Often it’s first text only in a conversation. For example, I want ALL my daughter’s replies and follow-ups to play the sound I’ve selected for her incoming texts.

Hey there jdjruff,

We'd like to rule out some possible causes as to why this may be occurring with new messages notifications:

  1. Have you already checked your Messages notifications are set to your preference per the steps in this link? Check out: Use notifications on your iPhone or iPad
  2. We see you're using an iPhone, but if you're using a compatible model, the latest version is iOS 16.0.3. You can verify this within Settings > General > About. Here's a link that'll show how to first back up, then Update your iPhone or iPad.
  3. Sometimes unexpected behavior can be resolved with a restart: Restart your iPhone
  4. Do you have an Apple Watch paired with your iPhone, and if yes, do you sometimes check it for new text messages? The reason we're asking is that if you check a notification from a paired watch, it won't show on your iPhone. More details can be found here: Notifications on your Apple Watch

Cheers.

Hello jdjruff,

It does matter if the iPhone is unlocked versus when it is locked. When locked, the iPhone will provide a notification of the incoming iMessage, but if unlocked it will not make a notification alert unless you navigate away from the conversation in the Messages app.

If you are experiencing this when the iPhone is unlocked and viewing the conversation, then it is not an issue, but expected behavior.

In case you have feedback about this, we'd encourage you to provide that directly to Apple here: Product Feedback - Apple

Let us know if that clears this up or not, take care.

Thanks for the reply but none of it is particularly helpful. (And, no, I’m not using an Apple Watch.). My newest available iOS is 15.7 and it’s installed.

After the first text in a text conversation, my iPhone 11 does not play a SOUND for subsequent messages from the same sender. So if I reply to a text, and the sender replies to me, there is no audible notification. And so on until sometime later.

I’m not looking for groups or summaries or anything elaborate. I simply want every incoming text to play a sound, no matter if my phone already played a sound for same sender just minutes before.

I’m using the Messages app on iPhone, and iMessage more specifically. I would like to have the audio notification play EVERY TIME I receive a text/message/iMessage, not just for the first incoming message of a back-and-forth string. Can I set my iPhone 11 (w/iOS 15.7) to play a sound for EVERY incoming text/message/iMessage? Does it matter if the phone is in/out of Lock Screen (as it does for flashing light notification)?

PS Why does it take so many (>10) tries to post my reply?
